Ok, so i want to prep my bug for painting. What is the best way to go about it?

What is the best filler to use? What is the best way to apply the filler?

Where do i apply the filler? over whole panels, or just imperfections? what way will give me the perfect finish??

Hey,

First things first ñ if you are prepping - filler and primer arenít water proof so once itís prepped it canít get wet ñ this goes for rubbing down filler and primers with wet and dry too.

Polyfiller / plastic padding are good as itís quite flexible.

Only fill imperfection, weld, dents ñ if you go for panel skims you may as well go for bare metal instead ñ bare metal would be less hassle in the long run and wonít crack and fall off in great piece should water get in and freeze..

Apply the filler one skim ñ donít over work it, and make sure you blade is clean.

Hit it with a random orbital sander to take the top off it ñ donít be temped to try and level it with a sander youíll get waves and all sorts.

Finish flatting by hand at this point youíll think thatís as flat / smooth as possible ñ itís not!

Get a can of primer and spray a light coat over the filled area wait for it to dry and start to sand this off evenly ñ very evenly ñ once all the paint / primer is removed it will be pretty straight. rub it over with thinners / spirit to clean off and give you a moment of wet look to get an impression of the finish.

Once you are happy with the filling ñ prime it in filler primer ñ give it lots and sand back every two / three coats ñ thatís it ready for top coat.. ñ if there is any bare metal give it a rub with thinners and etch prim it with Acid primer.

The best finish is going to be a strip down and back to bare metal ñ (DONíT be tempted to blast it / have it blasted) use minimum filler ñ good panel repair and welding needs very little filler.

Etch primer it, primer, top coat.

Sound like you are just starting out on the old paint trip ñ the best bit of advice is donít go for that mint, concourse look unless you have plenty of time, money and a dry warm storage. To get a paintbox finish you need the kit the paintbox boys have but more importantly you need the experience and knowledge ñ painting isnít cheap cuz it isnít easyÖ but there is a lot to be sad for the satisfaction of painting yourself and a lot to be saved by prepping yourself ñ if you are around essex give http://www.elitebodystyling.co.uk/ a bell the guys will work with you and are sound

cheers dude. I guess i'll be getting the actual spraying done elsewhere. I just want to get as much of the prepping done myself before hand to save myself some money. I've done filling before on an escort and my god i know what you mean about making it look smooth.

I need to get it sprayed and final prepping done, do you have a rough idea how much that would cost??
