Hi...Basic question. Fitting an amp gauge. Do I feed one wire to
negative connection of the battery and the other to live feed. Thanks for help...andy :)

The VDO diagram linked is one wayto do it.

But on a VW, I strongly advise not using an ammeter at all.
You must run a hefty cable from the Gen/Alt all the way
up to the dash.

The combined voltage drops in the new cable plus the
old Main feed serve to confuse the voltage regulator
and the battery winds up with incorrect charging voltage.

In the end, the ammeter provides very little info.
You are better off with a dash voltmeter and the wiring
for it doesn't create any problems.

Totally agree. One of those voltmeters that has the red, yellow and green sections is an excellent visual indicator.

That said, any standard voltmeter will do as you know if it's reading 14.5 volts, everything's ok but if it's reading 12 volts (or less) something's not right.

Thanks all....good advice......I am now going on the phone to order
volts gauge. It seems a better way of keeping an eye on the charging situation. ....andy
