No, all Type 2 flywheels are not the same.
Starting in '76, the diameter became greater,
and the bellhousing grew as well.

you can get 210mm, 215mm and 228mm ones

only the 228 will not fit inside a std bug bellhousing.

228's was used on 2.0's
If the teeth are chewed to the point the starter gear may have trouble getting in or the tops are missing then yes is may give you grief.

I have a complete flywheel/clutch assembly kicking round my garage £10 its yours. Can post if need be. :hangloose
HI, turbo, if you've got the one i need i'll take it! whats the postage on that?
there are 200, 210, 215 and 228mm clutch sizes and hence flywheels, available for type 4 engines...

the 228 clutch and flywheel will not fit into and work in a bug style box without a fair bit of modifying of cmponents...

the flywheels are all the same outer diameter...
Thanks for the info guys,i'll measure the clutch surface face to confirm size?Got a feeling a smaller flywheel may have been used with 1600 box but not sure if this is possible to do?
You are correct. As I noted earlier, the 2.0L engines
have a bigger diameter flywheel and won't fit into a 1600 box.

goes into this in detail as there are several pitfalls to watch out for.

hello jim:)

with the greatest respect... do you have a 228mm and a 200mm flywheel... just out of interest...put them together and measure the difference in outer diameter...

just to confirm the sizes.. i did just that few weeks ago...

it doesnt say the diameter changes in either of those articles either ....as far as i can see... please correct me if im wrong...:)
Gwan:

I think you are correct that the actual OD of the ring gear
is the same, but the "lip" of the flywheel was redesigned to
accomodate the larger clutch. That meant moving the
starter gear slightly.

In any event, there are still differences which can trip up the
unwary.

Thanks again for catching that/.

I'll double check during the week that its 228mm. Postage would be about £13

i know youre right with the ring gear and the starter engagement...

for my sins i have chopped and changed many t4 engines into different vehicles over the years.. and reversed the trend with t1 onto a 78 bay (never again!..)

as i said.. not trying catch you.. i know you know what youre talking about... just dont want people looking for an infamous "big" flywheel:D

Yep definately a 228mm flywheel clutch etc, all the teeth are good to! Let me know if you want it and we'll sort something out.
