How do you know it's not draining your battery ?

First quick things to check -

Fanbelt tension.
Dynamo brushes not worn down
Wires good & tight on dynamo and regulator.

borrow a multimeter off someone

set it to volts (d.c.)

put meter across battery (black wire / -ve to earth wire and red to positive)

ignition on engine not running .... 12volts

if u have an alternator engine running at idle 13.6volts rev engine upto 14.2v

if u have a generator engine running at idle the voltage should rise a small amount rev engine voltage should rise up say 0.5volts BUT it should rise

hope this helps
