Hello, I have a 66 model ghia coupe I’m putting back together. Have a strange indicator issue, effecting the offside rear lights but not the near side. When the ignition is on, the 3 pin indicator relay clicks but no indicators, if you indicate left both front and rear are bright and correct. Same when indicating right except the front indicator is not so bright. As soon as the ignition is on, the offside brake light lights. The braking system is not fully installed so no master cylinder switch for the brakes is connected. Looking at the wiring diagram the brake light and indicator power is on the same fuse? Ind relay is new so not sure what is happening or whether they are unconnected issues? Wiring is pretty much unmolested from new so no obvious short circuits. Appreciate any help. Cheers, Tony

Indicators : make sure all the bulbs are OK and are all the same wattage (21W), also make sure each of the indicator bulb sockets is properly earthed, and the connections are clean.
Brake lights: make sure all the terminals in the lamp housing are correctly connected, check that the wiring which would go to the switch isn't touching any part of the body or chassis.

Thanks for your reply - changed bulbs and cleaned all contacts and a lot better brightness wise. Brake light issue was caused by wires touching in the rubber boot of the master cylinder switch. This did highlight that the near side brake light wasn’t working so positive in a way! Still have indicator relay and tell tale light operating in the switch/stalk off position so will have a look at the stalk next. Appreciate your help. Tony

Thanks for your reply - changed bulbs and cleaned all contacts and a lot better brightness wise. Brake light issue was caused by wires touching in the rubber boot of the master cylinder switch. Indicator relay working in off position means that your indicator circuit is grounded when switch is off. Have you tried removing the tell tale bulb to see if that stops it?

Thanks for the suggestion - I’ve removed the tell tale indicator bulb completely from the speedo and the relay no longer operates in the off position. Left and right indicators are ok still. Does this mean there is an issue with the bulb holders on the back of the speedo?

Yes - it means that your tell-tale bulb holder is grounded somewhere - it shouldn't be! There should be a single wire coming from the indicator relay to the bulb holder, and the holder itself should contact the 12v+ that also connects the alt/gen and oil lights. None of those should have a ground connection.
