My Dad lived there for a few years. Beer is quite expensive but for what you get in the hotels they are cheap, ie to get that level of quality and service over here you'd pay a lot more. Its one of my favorite places, just avoid ramadan which is on at the moment or july/august when the temps can push 50 C
Its not too bad at all to be honest, not cheap, probs about the same as here
can drink in hotels, and as every second building is a hotel there ain't no problems there! You get the rich arab oil barons in there drinking as well - strict it ain't! Can be very expensive for food etc in some places (the burj al arab for example - 50 quid for 2 cocktails, and you had to book to go to the bar!!!) but generally everything is top quality!
Massive ex pat community - I've got a few friends working there and loving it, have been a few times now....basically its like the fanciest bits of America without the Americans :incheek:
