Whilst under the van adjusting the brakes tonight, I noticed that the output shaft flanges conm, ing out of the gearbox have play in them i.e. I can move them up & down if I put a screw driver behind them.

The off side one isn't too bad, but there is 2 or 3mm movement in the near side one.

I know on other boxes I've worked on that a bit of play is normal, but this seem a little excessive. Is this normal for a VW? It's a 1600 Bay by the way.

They do have play on them from new - this is so they dont seize when the gearbox gets hot. The flange sits on a splined shaft and its the play in the splines you are seeing - not the gearbox bearings :)
