High mileage on a diesel?

1558 Views 21 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  Tractor Boy
I'm just about to go and look at a VW passat 1.9Tdi 1995.
It has 218K on the clock. Full service history.

Can anyone tell me if 218K is too high? I'm not up on high mileage, especially for diesels.

Cheers

that IS high milage......saying that i would rather have a well looked after high miler than an abused low miler..... ;)
True, yeah!

The car is only 650quid, yrs MOT, VWSH, immaculate inside and out - that isn't my worry, my only worry is that it will conk out soon.

Anyone else got any advice?

I'm sure it will be good for over 300k, especially with FSH.

The economy will make taking the chance worth while.

I've done over 20k miles in my TDi Passat over the last year, and it still looks and feels exactly as it did when I got it.

:)
Cheers for that :)

No worries, if I was looking for something similar, I wouldn't have any hesitation.

Good luck :)
TBH high mileage isnt as much a problem with diesels as it is with petrols.

Just make sure the belts have been changed at regular intervals & its been well serviced.

On older higher mileage engines, best way to look after them is give them an oil change regulary IE every 5000 miles, not hard and not really expensive to do.

Sounds like a well looked after vehical so I wouldnt worry about the high miles.

Thats nothing to worry about if it has been looked after well.
I sold my '94 Audi 80 TDi Estate (same engine as Passat ie 1896 cc 90 bhp) late last year with 213k miles on it, the engine was all-original (with exception of regular belt changes etc) and it still returned almost 50 mpg.
Was an absolutely superb car/engine, ran it on fully-synthetic oil and only used Genuine filters, also religiously changed diesel and air filters to the servicing schedule.
Did over 100k miles in that car over a period of 5 years without a moments trouble, reckon there's loads of life left in that Passat......

;)
Its not the engine I'd worry about, apart from belts etc, its the rest of the car, suspension parts etc will be starting to wear.
Change the oil every 6k/6 months and away you go.

I run a Pug 405TD with 175k - 45 mpg at 70 mph - I've done 700 miles in a day in it...
My golf 1.9 diesel... 201K not missed a beat. I've had it from nearly new with 19k on the clock. change the oil/filter every 5k.

Schweet :hangloose
What everyone else says..... the engine will be fine but rubbers bushes and suspension might need attention.....

Did you get me PM Tan?
If it's has full VAG history then I would expect the bushes, bearings etc to have be maintained accordingly.

My T4 Van has just turned 285k and is still going strong - And it aint even a diesel !!!!
Ive had my 96 1.9 TDi for a year now. Between the MOTs Ive put about 30k on it, and all Ive done is oil and filters every 10k. Its now on about 146k.
Straight through the MOT, no advisorys.
Gives about 50 mpg.

Has now become a low value, but almost priceless car to me!

If I had to drive 700 miles a day, I'd be slashing my wrists a long time ago.

Are you a Haulage driver?
Another vote here for high mileage diesels.

As others have said , keep the oil clean (6k / 6 months max changes) , change fuel and air filters every third or fourth oil change.

Look after the belts and get them changed if in doubt.

:)
Any engine, if looked after well, can get well over the 200k mark.

My bay (2litre type4) has just passed 260,000 miles on its original engine without being reconned.

It all depends how its been driven and how its been looked after :)
i had an L reg tdi golf with 190k on the clock and fvsh, it blew up and died about 2 months ago! i did have a ford galaxy tdi (vw engine) which was an ex-taxi and it had done 300k and never missed a beat, did 3000 miles in a week through spain in it, never used any oil or water etc.
