i'm using HD UNI TECH rods by CB in mine... seem well recommended...?

Those are pretty much what im going for,think i will stick with those rather than the ssp ones..
5.4 or 5.5 though??

 

I have the CB ones in mine. Mine are 5.4 ones with a 74mm crank.

With that stroke Dickie, the 5.4's will give a good rod ratio, you only realy benifit with the 5.5's from 82mm stroke upwards

Been looking at this myself (94mm pistons) as I've just bought a 78.4 crank from beetleragtop (cheers dude). Did some searching and got: "use whichever length makes your deck height and compression ratio come out the way you want - the difference in characteristics between a 1.75 and a 1.78 rod-length-to-stroke-ratio is insignificant"....

and...

"With B-pistons and a 78.4 crank you're looking at 5.5" for a good deck measurement. If you are trying to configure for a specific rod ratio, don't bother. There will be no measureable difference in performance whether you get short 5.349 rods, 5.4 rods, 5.5 rods or even 5.6 rods. When you stroke a VW, ignore rod ratio. Choose rods to assist in engine configuration and deck."

As such I'll be going for 5.5 rods (or rather Laurie will be when I get it to him.....)

 

The rod ratio has a very minor effect on performance, but can have a significant effect on wear
