I cant get insurance to import a car

819 Views 9 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Nic B-C
Does anyone know where i can get insurance for a car I am looking to buy from france (french registered)
my insurance provider (motor trade policy and private policy) say that
I candrive
1) a uk car abroad
2) a french registered car in the uk

But not a french registered car in france, I questioned this and asked what about the large number of cars being brought in other parts of europe to be imported to the uk ?
I was told that the company who supply the car have to provide the cover for the car untill it leaves the port and that there have been insidents where people have found that thay are not insured after a accident because of this.

If you know of a specialist insurance provider that can help please could you pass on the number.

I hope someone can help

insurance

bring it back on a car trailer dude :hangloose
that will be the case with most, if not all UK insurance companies.

I dont know how it works in France, but in Germany you buy "Export Plates" and as part of the process you have to take out insurance.

Once in the UK you contact your own company and give them the chassis number and youre covered for 14 days usually...

It might be worth talking to the French registration office and see what the deal is. You might have to take out local insurance with a French company.

Failing that, trailer it ;)

Isn't that because, in Germany, the plate belongs to the driver and not the car?

yep.

well kind of... you cant just swap your plate from one car to the other without informing them... well, not legally anyway.

I know in France the plate stays with the car, but there may be a similar system in place for insurance in France?

yeah but the point is the German export plate includes the minimum of insurance you need to get it back to the UK
ttt

Thanks for the advice so far i think that i will give the guy in france a call when open on monday and ask him to clarifie the insurance if it comes with the plate

I will let you all know the outcome

Just want to drive the car asap
could'nt you get the seller to drive it to the port for you, then have it transported from the port this end, it's not that expensive (about a pound a mile) as i'm sure it's illegal for you to drive a car on french plates in this country untill you've mot'd and registered it.

But would you be legal on the drive back through Belgium, Holland or France?
