Before man got the ability to write things down do you think we had far better memories?

Doubt it - the idea of marking symbols and stuff probably came alongside the development of the thought processes and such, with increased intelligence and so on. Before that there was probably not a need to write down.

Bear in mind that making notes doesn't always need a language or a pen - humans have been marking cave walls for ever.

Didn't man draw before he/she could write?

I meant before they had the ability to record things really.

I guess Hermand is right the ability to record things probably developed alongside intellegence
ok, how about this, before man could talk, what language did their 'inner voice' speak in? ;)
There probably wasn't an awful lot to remember at that time!!
Before writing stuff down to remember it, they probably just tied a knot in their hankies.
Being able to write things down is the solution to them forgetting things all the time :D
it depends if you mean recall or recognition memory... the written word has had a huge effect on our recognition memory
yeah now we have to remember 50 peoples names, each being vastly complicated and double barreled and all their families, all there telephone numbers, the number of the chip and pin, how to operate the complicated finance package on the PC, how to work `technology` etc

back then everyone was named `ugg` and the key things to remember were
`lady, shag her`
`it moves, eat it`
`if we rub these sticks together for long enough we have fire`
`fire very hot`
`we cook moving thing we found earlier on it`
