Hey Flip,
I'd have thought most booster seats can have the back bit removed so the child can just sit on the bottom bit - which can be used with a lap belt.
:)
yeah thats what i thought but a mate of mine has bought one and it says that not suitable for lap belt only

maybe he just bought the wrong one ;)

i know lap belts arent ideal but if its all you got in there with no way of fitting a 3 point surely that should be enough

cheers
not a lot of seats can be fitted with a lap belt only, but if you only have a lap belt available you dont have to use a seat if the 3 points are all in use. if the seat is not designed for a lap belt your better off just not using the seat.

that might help!!

nykxx
cool as, that helps :D

think me mate is worrying to much, he cant fit 3 point so cant take the grand kids out

The whole point of a booster seat is to lift the child so the diagonal is in a safer position. If you only have lap belts you don't need a booster.

But he's worrying about the wrong thing, lap belt aren't very safe anyway, if you don't slide out of them they cab break the wearers back, ok if an adult makes the choice whether to get in but it's not fair on a child that doesn't have the choice.

thats what i thought but the reason for the new law is not to put diagonal part in a better position it is to put the lap section in the correct place, accross the lap instead of in the stomach

i done a lot of looking into this and there doesnt seem to be any seats on the market that only allow lap belts, also if you have belts fitted then you HAVE to have some sort of seat

if your vehicle is before certain age you can take the seat belts out and have none that is legal but very stupid

this is the one that was hard to find information on

if when your child is in a booster seat there ear line is above the back of the seat then that is classed as illegal and dangerous for the child and a seat with a back must be installed, most good booster seats should have a sticker on the base telling you this fact, halfords told us it was fine to have a booster seat in any car i then turned the seat over and showed the sticker they didnt care

I have been to the police cos this issue is sooo confusing, they said that with lap belts you cant use a booster, altho you won't get done by the police, because of the age of the van your exempt if it hasnt got the correct seat belt fittings.
This is not the safest for the children, my children are just in lap belts as well, altho a few years ago quick fit used to sell a car seat for 1 to 4 year olds that just used a lap belt fitting. Other than that the police advice is to sell your van/beetle.
or do what i have done modify your bus and beetle so they take 3 point seat belts

Adult belts are best for adults over 150cms (4ft 11ins) or taller. They are not designed for children. A booster seat or cushion may not be popular with older children but it puts them in the right position so that they get the maximum protection from the adult belt. It is important to get the belt low across the abdomen from hip bone to hip bone and over the shoulder, away from the neck.
Seems we're both half right. :)
seatbelts

could you tell me how you modified your van for 3 point belts as I am thinking of doing the same.
