I'm sure most of us had one of these.

This one just arrived as I'd quite like to restore one of these early cars with the auto-steer function

Being as they only made these in two colours, there's an amazing amount of variations with different wheels, bumpers etc. Think I have something like 7, all different in some way.

Yep I've several white ones in various states and possibly 1 red one with the superfast wheels. Possibly the 1st or longest surviving bug that I have

I was trying to list all the ones I have yesterday but it got a bit confusing! Here goes...

This is my other early white one, probably the one I'll restore

20200723_121234 by RS, on Flickr

Then I have another regular wheels but without the plate on the front

20200704_165744 by RS, on Flickr

Then it was one of the first castings to wear the new, narrow Superfast wheels

20200705_171522 by RS, on Flickr

Then the colour changed to red. This one again has no plate on the front...

20200704_165809 by RS, on Flickr

...but still retains the one-piece rear bumper that the white cars have

20200704_165829 by RS, on Flickr

Red, but with the front plate...

20210316_131415 by RS, on Flickr

...but split rear bumper

20210316_131422 by RS, on Flickr

This one has a different style plate with no sticker, raised edges and two diagonal lines cast in

20200723_121309 by RS, on Flickr

And other with the normal style plate...

20200805_141541 by RS, on Flickr

...and one-piece bumper

Haven't seen the two piece bumper before!
Mine are boxed away somewhere and haven't seen them in a while.

I had forgotten how many variations there were

Where do you guys find these!!! I got a rough driving school bug and restored it. Was complete and working although part of the steering wheel is broken. Have the later version of the Dinky with plastic wheels, can't remember if boot opens though.

During lockdown I've had a bit of an eBay habit, but there are still good things to be found at boot sales, markets and in charity shops.
I'd like to find that later Dinky, although the earlier one has more charm to my mind.
This is my other Corgi Motor School Beetle, bent steering wheel and missing a tyre, not too terrible though

As well as the later version with steering, I think that casting was also modified and released as as a Whizzwheels in various guises

20200919_093718 by RS, on Flickr

But before either of those was the East African Safari version in both left and right hand drive (!)

And Polizie - don't know if they had both LHD and RHD versions, partly as the steering wheels always seem to fall off inside

Very similar looking but without working steering is the Spot-On. I'm lucky to have bought this at a jumble sale when I was a kid, as they fetch strong money now

Haven't seen the spot on one before, looks class! I haven't a safari bug, but have the police one.
The later Dinky one was possibly one of the kits you bought as from memory the base screws on.

Corgi used that cast quite a bit, I've a couple of those with the towel rail bumpers I restored and have a yellow bug with towelrails that they reissued in the mid 1990s. I really should go through my boxes in the loft lol.

Tracked down an original Budgie single cab. These were reproduced so new ones can be found if you search. I thought this would be a similar size to the panel van, comparable to an early Lesney - but it's 90mm long, more like a Dinky or Corgi of the era

"Made in England" was deleted off the base at some point during the original production run, so this in an early one

I found the later version of the Dinky VW 1300. I'm sure it was originally supplied in kit form, complete with Humbrol red paint, some of which I had to get off the inside of the glass and base...

I'm quite tempted to repaint it to a better standard using the Humbrol paint, just as the original owner must have done in the 70s

That is a great find, I never realised that they had to be painted too! Was a great idea. I've a metallic blue kit one but it must have been supplied painted. I'd mucked about with a tin of Humbrol metallic blue paint and somehow got the perfect match to touch my one in, and a corgi Rover SD1 I have.

The blue ones were supplied finished, in 72 they changed the wheels, base and body and were either complete or sold as a kit. I've been searching and can't find another with a red interior online, so it's either rare or someone's worked out how to dye it

My blue one has the same wheels etc as your red one, but with white interior. Ihad always assumed was a kit as had a screw (from memory as stored away years lol)
