Just purchased my '79 T2 and love it!! Wifey worried tho coz I can't suss what engine it has and spending far too much time working out my mistress!!.....can anone save my marriage?? :lol:

Its got stamped "Hecho en Mexico" which I presume means "Made in Mexico" and the block is painted red with engine number AD 100304

I was told it was a 1641 but what Ive read the Mexicans only produced a 1600?!? Can anyone help

The AD engine number signifies a 1600cc, but it may be one of these 'red engines'

The Mexico part may just indicate it had a new crankcase when rebuilt, not that the whole engine came from Mexico.

Thx Moby - Problem is parts and making sure I get the right ones?!? Also with setting timing etc

most parts are interchangeable on all aircooled lumps, mexican or not. Timing will be the same as a standard 1600/1641 lump ie static 7.5 BTDC.

The only major difference between 1584 (basic 1600) and the 1641 is the barrels and pistons everything else remains the same.
