MIG : Gas or Gasless

Hi there,
i'm a novice welder with a little experience and i'm thinking about buying my own mig to complete some work on my bug. Are there any disadvantages when using gasless MIG when compared to normal MIG and vice versa, which do you think is best, thanks, charles :incheek:

Gas is best, if possible ARGON CO2 mixture GOOD LUCK .

any particular reasons why?
 stupid question probably?
thanks
You get a far better weld smooth and neat. When you can try welding with gas then without you will see for yourself then.

Apparently the flux in gasless wire gives off smoke and stuff, which makes it harder to see your weld. I'm interested in people's opinions, because I'm looking to buy a welder myself.

I wholeheartedly agree.

I've tried gasless, just CO2 and Argoshield.

Gasless sucks. CO2 is ok.. welds aren't too neat.

Argoshield, no problem.
Gas, dont waste your money on a gasless.
Mine will be getting plenty of use soon (not my car btw) :incheek:
I found that gassless was good outside welding on a cold November night! :tick:

But I'd go with gas in you have a nice warm workshop . . . :D
and make sure you get a 150 + and make sure it has a cooling fan. dont go for SIP though
Hello, I have had a SIP for over ten years no problems at all its a 150 turbo. Will weld up to 6mm and go all day.

Remember a welding hat, large gas bottle, gloves etc.
Maybe go to night school on a course.

ive got one word for gasless-shit,if you still use the small bottles get them from machine mart they do a 600g bottle for £7-98,how much do you pay at your local car shop for a standard 390g bottle? ;)
well... it looks like gas is the way to go, thanks guys, why is a 150 or higher nesecarry as i'm on a tight budget and can only really afford a 105? thanks

lower powered ones usually start off very high on power and are less controllable, higher powered ones can usually be turned down lower which is what you need for thin old metal.

far easier to use a good welder if you are learning.

Have a look on here for secondhand welders may be way to go as can include masks, gloves, bottles etc
ive got a clarke pro 90 and works fine,i even repaired the angle iron on my trailer with no probs ;)
As I've discovered, gasless isn't just inferior, the welds are actually DANGEROUS. Weld a plate in with a gasless, and you'll be able to punch it out again.
