Hi,

My type 4, 2 litre, van engine has developed an intermittent missfire. It's worse when the engine is under load and I've noticed the engine gets hotter when on long runs.

So far I have: checked the timing, replaced the distributor cap, HT leads and checked the spark plugs (they looked a bit sooty but the gaps were O.K). It is fitted with Petronix electronic ignition (couple of months ago) so there's no points gap to check.

My next thoughts was to replace the coil (could a faulty coil cause a misfire or do they just fail). Before I do that is there anything else it could be.

cheers for any advice

Mat

It can be the coil. Under load, the plugs require higher voltage
to fire, which stresses all the hi-tension components.

If a different coil doesn't cure it, swap the points back
in as a test.

Cheers Speedy Jim,

The problem does seem to have occured shortly after installing the electronic ignition. Maybe my old coil wasn't up to it.
