The first Volkswagens "sold"....

As I'm sure most of you know, The British Army took control of the Wolfsburg factory in 1945 with a view to producing reliable military transportation for the occupying forces in Germany. Early post-war production started in very small numbers - just 58 'normal' Beetles were produced in the remainder of 1945! Production started to ramp up in 1946 and it was realised that the requirement for cars for the military was soon going to be fulfilled. Thoughts turned to commercialisation of the Volkswagen. Would anybody be interested in such a car??

The first step towards selling the Volkswagen outside Germany happened in February 1947. It was announced that members of the occupying forces would be apply to 'apply' to become the owner of their own Volkswagen. 1600 cars had been alloted for this scheme- 800 for the American forces and 800 for the British forces.
The application had to be made to the Maintenance Dept at the Control Commission Germany offices in Lubeck. Your name would then be entered onto a waiting list.
Most Volkswagen applicants were alloted a VW within six months. Once allocated a car, you sent your cheque for the princely sum of £160 0' 0d to the Foreign Office in London and you collected your car a couple of months later. All of the 800 British cars were issued with 'BZ' licence plates signifying 'British Zone'.

Here's the stuff that would have come with your brand-spanking-new '47....

....and that concludes the story of the first VWs ever sold! :)

The 10,000th beetle to come off the production line was covered with workers' scrawled demands for more and better food!

"Better and tastier food, or there will be many things we won't forget!"

and . . .

"10,000 cars and nothing in the stomach - who can stand that?"

And now the Wolfsburg factory has it's own Butchery, it's own branded ketchup and of course VW Currywurst! :)

Rich, do you have any semi-auto Bug info? I've found a few things on the web but not a huge amount.
