Hi everyone,

I'm new to the VW scene and after playing around with high performance jap drift cars, I've had a change after seeing some slammed bugs at brighton breeze and I've now just put a deposit down on an 1955 oval.
But as I'm new to this and have only had 3 weeks to work out what to look out for when buying an oval, there might be something I've missed?

For instance this 55 oval has the Ariel right next to the front window and not on the side front panel like all the oval's I've seen in pictures??

I know that late bugs have the Ariel in this place and that's why I'm a little bit concerned.

Everything else seems right, so is it that someone just moved it as it has a new CD radio installed?? or could something be wrong??

Here are some pics and I have circled the ariel in green and I was also told that it's a UK RHD OVAL, but how can I tell this?

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks.

Best regards, Alex.

Someone's cut a hole and stuck an ariel there. Not the end of the world...
It's a 56 for a start, interior looks to have been retrimmed, Aerials were dealer fit, so type and location differs, yours is totally acceptable.

Reg'd '55?
Dehne fuel gauge is non standard, but a nice period accessory, shame the tanks been changed as you have no sender for the gauge.
Reg'd '55?
Quite possibly, but it's defo a 56 model year, not a 55.
June 55 was a big changeover date for ovals, lots of stuff changed.
Hi guy's

What do you mean by reg'd 55?? can you tell what year it is from the number plate? as it's only 3 letters and 3 numbers.

And the fuel gauge on the dash is not real it's just for show, I will be removing it once I have the car.

Could someone point out a few things that make an oval a 55 year?

Thanks.

It's a '56 'model' as Andy says (types) . . . although it could have been 'built' late '55 . . . the fuel gauge is worth money . . . keep it ;)

The car looks fine ;)
yip .
56 .

nice car !!

what goes in the big white trailer ???
In June 55 lots of things changed, all of which make it quite a landmark for oval spotters.
Pre Jun 55:
Ribbed doors, the doors have a raised rib around the door panels.
Flat external door handles.
Straight gearstick
Heart tailights.
Grooved internal handles and escutcheons.

Post Jun 55
Non ribbed doors.
Ribbed external door handles
Cranked gearstick.
Oval tailights.

Ther's more differences as well.

It's nothing to do with the no plate, for the 1956 model year and thereafter, VW start the new model year on August 1st of the previous year. So your car could easily have been built between August 55 and dec 55, but would be a 56 model year.
