so if the gauge is a 8 ohm full 73 empty

The vw sender would be spot on when empty and just not show quite full when it is?

 

I doubt you'd even see any difference.

The information I have on hand says that empty should be about 47 Ohms, half full 22, and full 10. All +/- 5%. I don't want to confuse things but 73 and 47 are very different readings. Have I missed something?

 

I have always worked to a rule of thumb of 8 full and 88 empty -easy for my grey cells! In reality there is quite a bit of variation on the empty value, depending on the exact model and type of sender, from the lower 70's to upper 80's. Certainly have never encountered a 47 ohm sender! Well, I got it out of an official VW service manual, but the others I have checked make no mention of it. Maybe it was a misprint and was supposed to read 74 rather than 47. It does happen, even in VW literature.

If the problem is the fuel gauge not reading correctly - check some other threads on here - I fixed mine by getting rid of the 30+ year old fuel gauge voltage stabaliser (it was a light bulb!!!) an dcreated my own.
In a way the resistance range is not too important as long as you can trim the gauge to read full and empty.
