I was checking the synch on my carbs yesterday ( 40 IDF'S) with a snail gauge only to notice number 1 was pulling half the air of the other 3!! after further investigation it seems it's not firing at all:confused: I have a spark, valve gaps are good , the plug was very black(dry).
any pointers for when I go back to it tommorrow?? fuel?,compression?air leaks?

At least do a poor man's compression test.
Turn engine by hand and note the compression "peaks".
There should be 2 noticeable peaks for each rev of the crank pulley.
2 revs for all 4 cyls.

If you get 4 similar feeling peaks, move on to air leaks, carb problem.

If only 3 peaks...........
