Pay at the pump petrol. How come they don't need a PIN?

Seems odd to me. :bandit:

I don't even know how they work, cos I've never used one.

Does it basically connect through as if you were buying something over the internet/phone?

I'm sure it will happen, but Pay at the Pump was out before Chip & Pin. :hangloose
My guess is that someone at head office has made a calculation - add technology and support to run PIN vs. losses made on dodgy cards.
More expenisve to add PIN tech.
ASDA at Blyth, Northumberland makes you enter a PIN

Mind you, if I had a business in Blyth I'd want cold hard cash.....

the asda in aintree also limits how much fuel you can have
they all limit you to 60quid max fuel. also, with ANPR, even if someone did use a stolen card, unless the car was stolen too, thjeir plate would be on record associated with the transaction.
Tescos is great if you're up to your overdraft limit ;)

Ditto! :D
Someone els who lives life to the edge of his overdraft told me about it. ;)
Asda in Lincoln needs a pin - and you are limited to a maximum of £ 70 per day - A pain when you want to fill up 2 cars, much better than queueing up with the rest though - people still seem scared to use the pay at pump system :D
I like pay at the pump - the temptation of choccy and crisps is eliminated! :D Good for the diet!
tesco round my way (lakeside) keep stopping and starting the pay at the pump because of losses on fraudulent cards. i like it as its quick and easy and good for when my legs are bad or the kids are in the car. but best of all, if youve only got a couple of pennies in the bank and need petrol it lets you have it anyway then you just get the money in the bank asap or next pay day and you dont usually get charged from the bank if its not too long!!! oh and i love watching people running to the shop to tell them that 'that person hasnt come in a paid and now they are driving off', its funny in a smug kinda way!!

nykxx
Same principle with the automatic checkouts in supermarkets. I suspect they will introduce chip 'n' pin soon though as Tesco have been hauled over the coals because of the huge potential for card fraud on their non c&p auto tills. As peeps have said though Asda have c&p anyway, so they're leading by example :)
Good point. And how degrading must it be to the checkout people who work next to the machines?!
