Photoshop – a technical question…

I've been working on a large file (1.02Gb, yes it is large (A1) with lots of necessary layers) that has initially been saved as the new large image .psb format.

However the issue is that in CS3 and CS4, when trying to open the file up it creates absolutely massive scratch disc files that fill up my (80Gb) scratch disc. As a result the file will not open.

However when I open it in CS2, the scratch disc files are nowhere near as big and the file opens up OK.

Is this just a CS3/CS4 issue or am I missing something?

Any thoughts or ideas welcome…

Can you go to preferences and change them? Will that make any difference to the performance?

By the way, 1.02Gb is huge!!

That's nearly time-travel big.

I've worked on bigger before ;)

good job it's only a 8 Bit, 200 dpi image, not a 16Bit 300 dpi image! :D

preferences can adjust percentage of RAM allocated to PS and the scratch disc you use, not sure there is anything else that can help?

I'm not sure then, other than to make the scratch disc smaller?
Sorry. I just fold up in IT ignorance and call up the helpdesk

Are they like architects drawings or full colour photographs?
from Help:

"The following guidelines can help you assign scratch disks:

For best performance, scratch disks should be on a different drive than any large files you are editing.
Scratch disks should be on a different drive than the one used for virtual memory.
RAID disks/disk arrays are good choices for dedicated scratch disk volumes.
Drives with scratch disks should be defragmented regularly."

i was working on a file that size recently - what a ball-ache! Works machine chugged through it eventually
