Today I stripped the bearing covers and brake backing plates from the end of my rear axles (on a swing axle bug - '56 but fitted with later backing plates & bearing covers). After pulling off the small spacer in front of the bearing on one side I noticed about 1-2mm play when I pulled/pushed on the axle. Does this indicate a duff bearing? The bearing sounds okay when I rotate the axle, theres no ballsy rumbling noises and it rotates smoothly. Thanks :)

Thanks for the reply. What worried me about it was the fact that on the opposite side there is no push/pull play at all. Is this still normal? To have a mil or two play on one side but not on the other?

I have play on nearside and none on offside. Keep an eye for oil weeping, too much weep will indicate tube wear..
