Me and a mate just bought almost identical polo sdi's (1999)
He bought his knowing that the gearbox was shagged, especially selecting 4th,also it had issues with the dual mass flywheel.
After gloating over his woes,i've started to notice that mine is a bit stiff when selecting 4th,and especially difficult when dropping down from 5th.Now i'm starting to panic,as i know this can be a costly repair and the boxes can be hard top come by.Both cars have done just over 100.000 miles.

So,is it a ticking timebomb or should i check the linkages etc?.Is there any particular component that can cause this, apart from the gearbox?.I'm changing the box oil soon so hope it gets better;)

I would start with changing the gearbox oil to some 75/90 semi synthetic. You can buy it from GSF in a 4 litre can at a decent price. At 100k miles it's probably black and watery! If that doesn't work then just drive it until it expires!
