Blowing head gasket, rocker cover gasket and exhaust gasket. Leaking oil seals everywhere, blocked engine breather, oil on the timing belt.......

and it's watercooled

I spy garden hose :D

Is it a polo?
Yeah Mk2.

Garden hose was to extend the engine breather into an old coke can as it was filling the air filter housing with brown sludge.

Genious! :D

That probably won't be needed when you've put the head back on then.

I'm glad my bus isn't water cooled. My mate bought a T4 a little while ago and he's had nowt but bother.

I've had a couple of Polos with blocked breathers before. As you found out, they suddenly leak from every single join on the engine, and blow sludge into your air filter. Yuck!
Couldn't figure out what the problem was the first time, and it leaked about a litre of oil for every 100 miles. You could've actually tracked my route anywhere by following the drips of fresh oil - I kid you not, it was that bad.
Only took a VW specialist garage a quick look under the bonnet to diagnose it, and was cheap and hassle free to let them do it, rather than faff with it myself.

Then I had a Jetta that did similar - except its breather is an integral part of the rocker cover, but luckily knew someone who took it apart, cleaned the gunge out by burning it away with an oxy-acetylene torch, and rewelded the filter back into place, all for a tenner. :)

No need. I checked it with a sheet of glass and some engineers blue. It's nice and flat :D

The problem came from a couple of loose head bolts that allowed the head gasket to start blowing. Once they start there's no stopping them as the gasket gets damaged and wont reseal regardless of how tight you do the head bolts up.

It's a common fault on the early ones.

It should be all back together by thursday if I can get the unobtainable part I'm looking for.
