Replacing spindles on a bay window

492 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  monkey
Hi Can someone give me a basic step by step on how to change the spindles on a bay please?

The Muir book deftly avoids it as he says that working with balljoints should be done by the professional. I can't find my Haynes manual either at the moment :(

Apart from a ball joint splitter, is there any other specialist tools needed?

I'm going to fit new wheel bearing covers and new ball joint rubbers - anything else need replacing when doing this job?

Thanks

You need the lever-action tool like:

If the ball joint shaft still won't come out, give the side of
the spindle casting a good whack with the BFH .

You'll have to jack up the torsion arm to get the shaft out
of the spindle. Do this in some safe manner that won't
injure the frt axle (or you).

Note where the "notch" in the top eccentric bush is pointing
so you can put it back approx the same.

Is there a recommended way to jack the arm up Jim?

Is there any way to mark the top bush so that its easy to re-align? I presume the tracking will need resetting afterwards anyway.
The manual shows a "special" jack made from a Beetle jack.
I use a small trolley jack under the arm. Chock the wheels
carefully so the Bus can't roll and place extra supports under
the beam for safety.

Feel the notch mark on the bush. Paint it white or chalk mark.
Yes, the alignment should be checked afterward.

Very helpful.
