RSS feed wtf ?

So i noticed a few weeks ago my phone has rss feed thingy on it and iv seen it on msn and i now see that volkzone has an rss feed option..............?What is it exactly?
I can guess it gets info to me but hows it work?
whats rss stand for?
I assume it would cost me money on my mobile?

Really Simple Syndication. It uses a small application to monitor the contents of a desired supporting website to show you the latest news or whatever the site wants really.

Like how some people have little pop ups to show breaking news.
