What I do notice when I run is that it feels like my feet smash into the ground with tremendous force, as if I was massively overweight. I seem to lack the spring and float that runners often appear to have, as if gravity is only just keeping them on the ground. Maybe being 6'4" and 16 stone doesn't help?
What speed are you doing on the treadmill? I'm 18stone and limit myself to 5mph. This enables me to add a bit of float and bounce to my form at the 3 to 4 minute mark once warmed up and relaxed.

Looking at Strava my body says 'no way' at the 8.5km point (that's a weekly total). By that I mean I get some sort of minor twist or strain. Over the last 5 months I've had:

Grumbling left Achilles - left it a week over Christmas. All good.

Creaking, clicking right hip - old injury coming back. I kept at it and stretched out properly. The muscles are now strong enough to support the joint.

Twisted left knee - my fault, tried 3 x 5mins while really tired. Kept going as felt fine after recovery 2 min walks. BUT lost running form at 10 ~ 15min mark and was flailing a bit.

I'm just not a runner and never have been...
Modern Humans are the very definition of runners. If you walk you barely use your gluts. You only really use them when jogging/running. It's a big muscle set to not be using most of the time. It's just how we've evolved.
Have a watch of Dr. Alice Roberts 3 part programme on our evolution. :)

1k is quite a distance if the body isn't conditioned. It's taken me 4 months of 6 days a week and pain/pleasure to do that.

Have you done all of the run/rest phases?

Hope you keep at it regardless. :)

I got to the end of week 2 before my app wanted me to pay, so I binned it and just played it by ear.

However, it's the same no matter what I try and has been the same every time I've tried to run over my life. Even when I was boxing and power lifting and pretty damn fit, it was the same.

Repetitive impact movements ruin me.

Last time I did C25K to the letter of law, as soon as the running phase got to a certain level, my hips and knees give up.

I've just had to nip out for some milk and I can barely dip the clutch.
I even felt that C25k was too much for me (in my forties) and I used to run 15 miles a week in my twenties. Hence recently building up from 1 min on the treadmill (with a decent warm up too and warm down).

Running is brutal though. :)

I've generally got my leg strength from cycling in the past. That really helped me (plus the cardio benefits).

Another option might just be walking. You'll burn the same amount of calories for the distance. It'll just take longer. I went through a phase of walking 40 miles a week. All the benefits with no injuries.

Had my follow up after the MRI last week - was a very quick one where he showed me the state that my kneecap is in, told me again that I will not be running, and referred me for physio.

The idea is that the physio will take me back to where I was before I started running, which is about as good as it will get. If it doesn't , then they will try a steroid injection. First physio session is tomorrow and I am looking forward to getting on with it...
Good luck! :)

How's it going runsters?
I was off the treadmill for a couple weeks. Went back on Sun and Mon for a couple short sessions. Hamstring was a bit tight after that. Back on it tomorrow. :)

.....so three of them entered a proper fell race tonight.....

.....and walked away with second place in the women's team race......

:)

Well. I posted that ^^^ one year and three days ago. I haven't run since...until this morning! I went out and did the inaugural local Parkrun. 110 runners lined up. It was a great route along the coastal path - 2.5km out and back again. I'll not get my results until later today/tomorrow but I reckon I did it in under half an hour which I'm well pleased with. I forgot to stop my Garmin as I crossed the line so it has recorded it as 5.05km in 30:19.7.
Good work! :)

More than ready. It's time to follow Mr Nike's motto.
I was thinking the same. If you're able for 4.5km three times a week, you're more than able for a Parkrun :)
Cheers guys. :) I was going to give it a couple more weeks and re-assess. Was planning on doing some jogging that didn't involve a treadmill too before an actual ParkRun as a shakedown. :D

Use Parkrun as a shakedown :D Seriously, there are runners/joggers/walkers of all abilities doing Parkrun. You only have to go another half a kilometer...that's only 500 metres :D My advice would be to start out slow and easy and don't get sucked along with the more competitive runners that are trying for PBs :)
Yeah, that's good info and encouraging. :D My 4.5km includes warm up and warm down. So in real money it's a bit less than 4.5km. Also I'm still pretty heavy, so just need to make 100% sure that ready for it. Probably more psychological now than physical. :)
