Anyone else on here have that feeling that they are no way near fit enough and think that taking up running is a good idea?

I started about a month ago, but am struggling massively at the moment..... Can't seem to get going and am lacking motivation to improve.

Does anyone on here know how much I should be starting with, and how often and have any hints on ways to improve?

I want to set myself a challenge....... target, but not sure what is achievable. (I'm really unfit and need to start from the beginning)

Vdubberdan, two words for you - Slimming World

I've been doing this with the missus for 4 weeks now and have lost 9lbs. I have never eaten so much food in my life and still get to eat crisps and chips and i'm still loseing weight. I don't go to weekly weigh ins or anything just read some forums on the net and get all the info from there.

Don't know how it works but it does.

Can't run at the moment due to an injury, but when I do i'lll be lighter!
People always say that it is lucky to be thin, but as a female I would love to wobble and have curves!!!
I am really paranoid about my weight and my iPhone app says that I am only burning 200 calories per 2.5k jog, but because I am in the early stages I must be burning more than that.

I am relying on good calories to keep it all check.

I am would wet myself if I could do a 5k by august so my 10k will be for next year!

How long have you been running for?
took it back up about 2 months ago after kinda going for a run onfce every few months but not getting over the "hump" of the second run (which is always harder as you've reminded yourself how hard it was!) but i used to do running seriously from when i was 11-21 (used to be ranked in the UK top 20 middle distance runners for my age at one point), so it doesnt take me long to get back into it when i can get motivated :)
Mmmm - pizza, the cornerstone of any nutritious diet and our Friday night special. Homemade, none of that processed muck

Nyom, nyom. Ya see Kackers, I put on half a stone just looking at that  Anyways, back on track. My calf muscles were twinging tonight so I stopped at 2 miles to see a beetle buddy and his '67 bug, then took a shortcut home (about a mile). I think I'll save myself for the weekend to save injury.
:)
Todays run..... did not go well
I stared off by a walm up walk.... wasn't feeling great, then went into a fast pace run for about 0.5km, slowed to a reasonable pace jog for the rest...
Then started walking, approximately 0.5k... then light jogged for 1k.... then...
Gave up and walked home :(

Keep at it fella  If I can offer one piece of advice and I'm no pro runner as you know. That shit feeling at the beginning of a run where you don't wanna carry on. It's normal and it doesn't go away. It still takes me 3-6 miles to settle down into a run. This is where running can be mentally challenging too. It'll come and you'll learn to deal with it but it ain't just you, it happens to everyone!
:)
I think as I'd had a week off due to preparing for an interview......

I was expecting it to be really bad, and as such I couldn't get over it :(

Ok, so next week it will all come back together again.

New week, new mindset.

You can do this prince, you know you can.

Now man up and get on with it.... ;)
keep at it mate, its worth it :)
If you can find someone to run with it would be a lot easier.

Don't think I'll be running this weekend ... got a blister big as a 50p on ball of my foot with skin come off. hurts like buggery :(
(cue jokes about painful buggery!)

Funny, I hate running with people, it really puts me off my stride and breathing. I suppose everyone finds their own path... :D

Well done to all new runners here. GET GOOD SHOES! :D
Well, I was all geared up and ready to go Friday and was approaching my first 1k mark when my left leg ceased up.

I tried to walk through it, but it was not letting up.

After a quick by the road massage, I walked gently back home!!!

Yesterday I walked the route.

Tonight I am just going to trot along and see how it goes!

:D
Ok, I had to ditch Wednesday and Friday due to a weird bug thing that I have had.

I was all up for going tonight but I still don't feel right and am still not really eating much.

I am hoping to get back on track for Wednesday!

How are you lot doing?

Is it not just too hot to run now?!

I hate running in the heat. I did 6 miles on Thursday night and it was just about bearable. To avoid the worst of Sunday's heat I set my alarm for 7.30am  to do it then but (there's always a but!) I woke up with a snotty nose and sore throat, that's right kids; manflu :( I feel better now but have lost my voice. Hoping to do 6 miles tomorrow night.

I went out on saturday to test run my new trainers! used map my run to mark out a route similar to the one i do at work! (same distance more elevation!) and ran it 9 seconds quicker!

I was however fucked afterwards as it was bloody hot!!

went running at lunchtime today after an hour of badminton in the gym (which was hot!) did the usual 3 mile route but by halfway round the heat took its toll and not having any water on me i quickly dehydrated and came in 4 minutes down on my best!

so tommorrow im going to take my camelbak as i hate carrying bottles!!

managed to rack up some good miles on my bike over the weekend (did 50 miles) all the way up until the rear axle bent AGAIN! (4th one this year! its not the bike & i dont jump kerbs so i guess its cos im a fatty! although im getting lighter!)
Blimey, that is some serious workout!

I feel as weak as a kitten and can't even manage a 2k run!

I feel so lame boys!!!

this time last year i was smoking 20 **** a day and gym was a swear word!

when i first did my 3.2 mile route i managed to run a few hundred metres at a time! then walk! it wasnt until a week or so later that i ran it fully in 37 minutes! i now do that run (excluding todays time) in an average of 26.30 minutes and its quite hilly! i will be doing my first run/race this year on the 6th of june its only a 5k but im hoping to blitz my 5k time as the course is flat!!

kackers! have you done a race/run yet? i found when i didnt have a goal i struggled but once i set myself a target of doing a 10k race in x weeks time i found it easier to train and focus!
there are plenty of 5k's going on around the country and finishing one will be a massive boost to your morale!

That is me, only it was just 6 months ago.

My goal is to run 5k in a race in september!! I believe in taking things slowly!!!

I am a scrawny bird so I am just trying to do the running to get my lungs cleaned up and running again.

I have managed 2.6 in one jog, but my lungs killed me.

I have had some weird bug and have not been eating for about 4 days so I dare not run as I reckon it will cause unecessary fainting!!!!

I do agree with this - if you are a 'lazy' runner (i.e. like the idea but get bored of actually doing it very quickly) then having someone to run with gives you encouragement and competition. I like that Bob tells me I've done well when I think I'm getting slow and reminds me how much further I can run now than when we started.

Maybe look up a local beginners running club?
I had my first run for a week today as I've had some snotty, coughy thing that I knew would get worse if I went running, and wouldn't let me run properly anyway.
Wise move, fine and dandy now and had a nice 5m run with Mrs T tonight:)

Run Forrest, run!
Hi matey,
i do alot of boxing - however jogging is great for stamina .
7 years ago i feel down a lift shaft and thought i would never be able to exercise - piled on loads of wait and got really depressed ! But met an osteopath who sorted my knees ( from accident ) and helped me to think more positive .
So where i started was get a 1 mile route sorted , stick to that route - use an ipod and jog to a nice slow pace ( never stop or walk - if need to rest jog really really slowly ) , the ipod helps with rythem and pace. Then progress to 2.5 miles do the same and jog about 3 times a week. And i promise once you master 2.5 miles - you can do any distance !! But 2.5 miles is that key! Oh and dont forget to warm up and those cheeky stretches . Good luck mate and enjoy ! you can do it :)
