Hi all,

Just fitted a reversing light and switch to my VW 1971 Bay. Unfortunately I did not read the instructions and I put the fuse between the switch and the light, rather than between the coil and switch.

Anyway now been rectified, but Bay now won't turn over at all. I cannot hear the usual "click" that I would hear from the starter motor and wondered if my mistake has broken the solenoid. Is my wiring mistake likely to have caused this and is there an easy way to check that it is indeed the solenoid that is the problem.

A simply 30 minute job.........

Assuming you gets dash lights with key on - if the engine doesn't turn over at all, take a look at this guide, following the 'direct method':

Wiring (vw-resource.com)

Please, please please make sure it's in neutral before trying the above, to ensure you don't run yourself over!

It's unlikely that anything is broken, more likely a loose connection somewhere.

The starter motor circuit isn't fused, so a blown fuse shouldn't cause this.

Hey. Thank you so much for your reply. You were spot on. Got under the van and found one wire had become disconnected from starter solenoid. Reattached and starts straight away. Thank you, you have saved me a sleepless night!
