Hi..Ive just bought a Smiths 12v transistor clock for the bug. New.old
stock...a find. Three wires on the back live / earth and a third one
which is brown ....where does that go!! ?. It is a positive earth clock
Help..please

Probably for the bulb. Put it to a 12v source and ground the earth and I would expect it to light up. Or it might wire to the flux capacitor but that was an optional extra.

Oh dear. Are you sure? I'll believe you if you are, but I think Smiths transistor clocks are early 60's, by which time most (but not all) British cars had gone over to negative earth, Land Rover being probably the last in about '67.

If its transistor, its going to be polarity sensitive. Does it have a metal case?

If it does, mount it on an insulated panel! Wire the earth (of the clock) to the vehicle +ve, and the live (of the clock) to vehicle ground. You will probably need to ground the brown wire to get the light to work, and I can't think of any way to make the light come on with the vehicle lights because the common is now at vehicle +ve.

A quick prayer may help before you connect it. :rolleyes:

Or you could always convert the bug to positive earth! :crazy:
