Needing a bit of advice.

just now when i turned the ignition key there was a high pitched squeely sound lasting about 1 sec before the engine started turning over, does this mean i need a new starter motor, sounds like something is about to pack up.

It is a 66 beetle with a 1600 in it a few days away from being shipped to the uk from New Zealand, my mate is loading it on the boat so i don't want to leave him with a starter motor that is about to pack up!

Thanks for your help

That's not really enuf info to go on. :)

Since it's a '66 (6 volt?) and the 1600 was/is 12 volt,
how was the starter adapted to the flywheel?

What I'm asking is whether this was taken into account
as the 6V starter won't mesh properly with the 12V
flywheel.
Perhaps a red herring...

The squeal might have been a dry bushing in the bellhousing
for the starter shaft.

Does the starter actually spin round, but the engine does not?

Too hard to diagnose with any certainty.
