Need to top up the steering box on the '58 & I've got a feeling the old seals are a bit weepy. I've heard of some people using grease or a grease/oil mix. Any recommendations?

Oh and luckily, the box is nice & tight with virtually no free play.

You could try an ep140 grade, Castrol do one, among others, or replace the oil seal perhaps.
That is what I was going to say - a high viscosity EP oil - I think certain grease might go a bit stiff.

grease will get "chucked" off the worm and stick to the box, then you would have no lubrication

Just so no one gets put off the idea of grease, all Bug 'roller' type steering boxes were filled with transmission grease from Nov 1964 (can be identified by the plastic plugs in the cover). I don't think the worm rotates fast enough to cause a problem here.

In the case of the 58, in this thread: It would have been originally filled with SAE 90 hypoid gear oil.
