just broke a sump plate stud when dfitting new gaskets n plate and old strainer :( but i did not excessivly tighten them  they were only just starting to get tight and i was only using a 3 inch long socket wrench so not exactly torquey, any ideas why it happend? and any tips for getting it out? i have not yet took the plate back off but it looks to me like there is not any stud extruding from the case.

thanx

The stud had maybe been over tightened sometime before which had weakened it a bit, i broke one once so now always replace the studs whenever i change the oil.

does the stud go into a blind hole? if it isnt you might have enough stud sticking through to screw it out from the inside. if not, if you have a welder you might be able to weld a nut on to the remains of the stud to remove it, but try not to heat the crankcase too much as it can burn if it gets too hot!
