Are you all talking about the big one behind the right side of the crank pulley?
yea as you look at the front of the case, just to the right hand side of the pully wheel, big allen bolt plug that plugs the oil gallery....

as far as i know its just where the oil gallery is machined (drilled from the front of the case during production, the ones on early cases ar plugged with a solid bung and later seem to be a threaded allen bolt type, i think it would be quite a good place for my oil temp sender as oil is always flowing past that point, also considered drilling and tapping the bung on the top of the case (the one behind the distributer on the left) anyone have any opinions on the best place to mount?? i recon the bet place would be the plug on the left half of the case in the middle of the bottom oil gallery as i think this would measure the temp of the oil as it flows to the crank...??
i was just worryed that the sender might foul the cylinder heads (ive yet to see)! :hangloose
I think it is the earlier engines that have the threaded bung, which was eventually replaced by a plug. I also think it is larger than M12 with a fine thread. I am fairly sure that it access' an open area near the cam shaft gear and would only receive 'splash' oil, so not a good place to put the sensor.

nice one pete, i'll check that out as im just going by something i read and not investigated it myself,
cheers!
just looking and im totaly wrong...!! Its the one below directly below that that at the bottom.... that would make sense now... sorry,
So, any idea why some (earlier) cases have the Allen Keyed plug rather than the standard blanking plugs... ??

thats what i was working from! :D

this is the spot where i was thinking of putting the oil temp sender as isnt tis the gallery that feeds the cam??

or the bottom left plug on this pic

Ummm...thought about in my type 3 filler blank plate as well!?

Don't think it really matters where it is as long as watch it and notice any change fomr normal...I guess before the coller, after the bearings would be best option but don't know if it is possible without looking at a flow diagram.
after the bearings... where does the oil go after the bearings?? does it just trickle down back into the sump?? or is there a return gallery ?? anyone got a flow diagram of how the oil sys works??
