touch up paint

i sprayed my splitty 2 years ago, it wasnt with a VW colour, it was a pale blue, i picked it from a RAL chart, it looks period and works well with the cream

i sprayed it on my drive under a portable garage, its a synthetic truck enamel ( chosen as it was s.posed to be hard wearing )

this weekend i spotted a little chip on the long side panel, not a issue, as i allways said with 2 young children, i didnt want it to be a pristine show van, more of a family camping van, BUT i have liked people commenting on such a nice van, so its now become i have moved to the " take pride in the van" camp

this morning i decided to get the tin of paint out, its been living on a shelf in the garage since the spray job

i put a few dabs on the spot with a childrens paint brush, it looked very light, so off to work i go, i have just got home and its still very light and stand out like a sore thumb

now i understand paint changes colour over time, buts its been SORN and locked in the garage for 18 months of the 2 years , other than that its been used for 1 week a month ago and last weekend, so hasnt been exposed to that much sunlight

my first thought was " the paint had changed colour due to the sun "
see above

then i thought i might not have stirred the paint enough and it was slightly darker at the top of the tin ? ? ? ? ? ( i did stir it a fair bit , or so i thought ), which i could order a small tin of the same RAL colour

any idea's ? ? ? ? apart from " dont mess with the paint, just accept the odd stone chip "

so good folks, any advice

if the touched in area is lighter than the rest of the panel, then it WONT be the paint on the van as sun damage will only make the paint fade lighter, not darker

my money is either contamination in the tin of paint, or as you said, not stired correctly... make sure that ALL of the sedimant at the bottom is mixed in, as the sediment is essentially colour pigment

cheers

that was 1 of my thoughts, i know that i have mixed the paint well as the tin is allmost 1/2 empty, my concearn is i didnt mix it well when i sprayed 2 years ago

BUT you say the bottom is where the colour would be, so that rules out my thought that when i sprayed the colour pigments would have been in the top half , thus darker in colour
cheers

give it a good mix depends if this paint in tin is just paint or leftovers mixed with a little paint that always makes it lighter maybe best buy half a litre of new paint always handly
