Heres one for you electro-tech boys.

I have swapped my dynamo out for an alternator (int regulator).
I have spliced the three red wires and connected the blue to green for the warning light. fine.

My red (gen) and green (oil) lights do not appear on the dash when the ignition is on. BUT if i earth them out in the engine bay on they pop!

The have good earth when ignition is off and appear to have 12v? when on.

If they have 12v surley the circuit is made and the light should be on?

help!!!!

The warning lights have permanent 12 V when the ignition is ON, via the 3 way connector in the bottom of the speedo. They come on only when the Regulator and the Oil pressure switch make the connection to Earth. (You proved that by earthing the wires). I would check the Oil pressure switch and the Regulator.

thought so. cheers. Funny that they are both out but there you go. I will purchase a new VW oil pressure switch and see. If the Alternator has no regulator so it would be the faulty part.

If your Alternator has only 2 connections on it, the Regulator is mounted internally. you can buy the regulator as a spare.
