On some models the car had a thing called a z bar bolted to them. It was a type of anti rollbar, but was discontinued in later Beetles but the rear body mounts carried on having the mounting points for it.
The Z-bar is not actually an "anti-rollbar" or anything like it. It is an additional torsion bar that functions only under certain conditions. It is used only on swing axle Bugs that utilise softer rear torsion bars to produce more understeer and therefore a more stable condition (generally, base model 1200's did not have it). The Z-bar was also fitted right up to the end of production in 2003.
