Hi I'm new to the forum

Please move this if it in the wrong place

I'm going to look at a 1302 1973 tomorrow
With the intention of buying it. (if alls well)
It was professionally restored 6 years ago. By the top restorers in Ireland.
After a call to the owner It has had a (new) engine put in 2 years ago. had disk brakes put on the front and halogen head lights fitted
It has '67 wings etc.

this is the add
1302 beetle

My biggest question is what should I be looking out for. ? ? ?

Thanks guys

The best thing to do is take someone who knows beetles.

I wish I'd done this when I bought my first car.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

First thing, thats not a 1302, its a 1200
1302's have a bulbous front valance and a `Mcphearson strut` front suspension.

You can tell its a 1200 as there isn't any air vents behind the rear side windows. 1200's in 73 still had blade bumpers (though admittedly, these could have been retro fitted anyway)

Main areas to look for are:
Heater channels (the sill)
Front bulkhead, front and rear inner wings
Frame head (where the front suspesion is bolted to the chasis
Look under the rear seat where the battery is. The floors tend to corrode there.

Check for end float in the engine. Pull and push on the pulley. It should move very slighty but not enough so you can really see it moving

Have a good look round it, take loads of pictures (especially of the area's I've said above) so you can go home and study them. If you have any questions, host the picture on here and ask away

Good luck

I went to see it this evening sadly it was dark
generally it was looked great
All juddervan man areas checked out.
I just have a couple of questions

This pipe on the exhaust is loose.
Do you reckon the box is on its way out ? or maybe it got a knock ?
If so what sort of money would a box be?

Are the ball joint like the one below easy to get?
How much would a pair be?

Thanks

dude,

Try uploading your images to photobucket.com or some similar hosting site. Then just use the image tags to put links to the pics on here.

photobucket automatically resizes pics for you.

It seems to have worked anyway...

try www.vwheritage.com for parts or even www.gsfcarparts.com

Exhaust box and ball joints are easy to get, pretty cheap and easy to fit. Depending on your budget and whether you want to keep it stock or not you can go for plenty of other exhaust designs. Steer clear of the monza 4 tip ones though - bit pants and glass pack ones are pretty darn loud.

The exhaust is a £30 part, it's about as important as the condition of 1 tyre! Much more important is the stuff to check here
