Another vote for late sixties here.

 

I chose a 69 ... small lights, nice curvy bumpers but with 12v electrics and disc brakes. Pay off is 4 stud wheels and wood effect dash (which I quite like).

I wouldn't personally get a post 71 model but some late's have been made to look really cool. Generally getting a 'good' one is probably the most important factor.

Its currently in a barn, and it will be there till after winter, by which stage I should have enough money to lower the front a tad & sort out my (minimum) rust issues.

This is it before it went into storage..

 

Mine was a 69 too. Marquise shape rear lights, bullet front indications and slimmer bumpers with a single port 1500. Would have one again in a heartbeat.

Perfect.

But.... I'd take a rust free unrestored late model over a rusty '69 or low light any day.

 

I kinda like the Type 34 Karmann Ghia rather than the Type 14 one. The edginess of the Type 34 looks a little better, although the Type 14 has greater potential for customisation.

Yep , mid-late 60's - those later large rear light clusters and wrap around indicators slaughtered the perfect lines of one of the prettiest cars ever - why did I ever let my '66 Bermuda Blue go..............?

 

Looks wise it will always be the Lowlight for me.

But everything else from the later Ghias like 12v, Disc Brakes etc etc.

67 - my 67 rhd coupe has 12v electrics, disc brakes and 1500 engine - plus a few 6 month only parts like seat back locks operated by opening the door ( same as type 3 ghia) but still has fuel filler in the tank under the bonnet rather than the ugly external filler flap they added in 68 ��

 

Late '74, when they finally replaced it with the Scirocco.
