I've just put a new timing belt and alternator belt on my polo and there's now a whirring noise thats relative to engine speed coming from the engine.

Have I tensioned the belts too tight or do they always whir a bit when new?

does it get worse as the engine gets hotter?sounds like one of the belts are too tight- probably the cam belt

Remove the fan / alt belt and run the engine briefly (a few seconds only if the fan belt drives your water pump) and see if the noise goes....

If you are lucky it might just be the alt belt over-tightened.

I retensioned the timing belt and the alternator belt but it was still doing it. It wasn't rubbing anywhere so I decided to drive it anyway and now it's hardly doing it at all.

I'm thinking that the new timing belt and new water pump was the cause and that it's bedded in now.
