who runs a BIG type 1 engine?

Hi everyone, just wanted some feed back on BIG type one engines, I'm looking at a new van which has a pro built 2165 in it, got all the right bits etc and receipts to prove, just wanted to know how reliable BIG type 1's are?

Will it need regular time on a rolling road or once set up correctly should it run consistently and be reliable?

I know thatís a difficult one to answer as it depends on the quality of the engine and how I drive it but generally how do you guys get on?

hey mate,
i wouldnt say my engine is BIG, but its a 1955cc which me and a mate built and i used it every day to get me to work which was an hour each way. no major problems.... was nice 2 drive cus the cam wasnt huge but the worst bit about the journey was the suspension, noise and lack of heating...

id spend the money on getting it set up right, or get a carb sync tool and make sure they are balanced and try getting the jetting and mixture sorted yourself... its not 2 hard... but wont be as good as on the rollers IMO.
Cheers dude, anyone with bigger one

This thing has a Webcam 86b camshaft so its quite lumpy low down ;)

I have a 2165cc with a Webcam 86 C in, no problems and runs like a dream.
I have a 2165 with engle 120, its ok around town, but prefers to be cruising, cant seem to find a gear its comfortable with at town sort of speeds, its either revving in second, or chugging in third.

Hi Tim, I was hoping for some input from the Green Hearts ;) I know you guys all have seriously sweet motors but do you have to spend alot of time tinkering or are they sweet once set up?

This engine has just done its 2K miles and now needs setting up and tuning.

Thats interesting, as this is in a van I need to potter around Cornwall as well as some hard launches off the lights when I'm challenged by a chav ;)

Think its just a combination of a stock 1300 box (trashed my rancho a few months back :( ) and the cam, it doesnt really start to hit its power until around 3k, so gentle plodding around town is a bit lumpy.

If built correctly then there is no reason why a big cc'd motor should not be reliable, as long as it is well maintained and basic regular checks are performed (oil, carb sync, valve clearances etc..) then all should be fine.

The other thing to do is repect the motor, if driven full on and hard continually the chances of breaking something increase.

I've done nearly 15,000 miles with my motor and it receives regular servicing and has been trouble free (touch wood!)... We are fortunate enough to have Pete at Funkenblitz check all our stuff over.

My advice would be to get it professionally checked and set up once in etc...

Good luck!

Then you can get on and get ripping!
