Why do people hide their number plates in photos?

I don't get it? Thousands of people a day can see it, so why edit it out in a photo? What harm could be caused?

You can gain information on a car from searching on the 'net, or doing an HPI check if you have the car's registration number.
Also, number plate cloners could just search the internet to find a plate on a car matching theirs. That would make it a lot easier for them.
I do it in most of my photos because a lot of folk are uncomfortable with their plates on the net. I either 'build up' the rest of the bumber and paste over it, or obscure it in a way that doesn't look obvious. No harm done, and everyone is happy. I can see people's point, and see no real reason to 'question why people don't want it. Just being 'uncomfortable' with the idea is reason enough to edit them, in my books.
As i work in gsf... i can do search's on number plates......... and the customer always looks quite shocked when u can tell them when they bought the car to the date ! and how many former owners it has had ect.......... goes quite deep on some search's

so that is why people hide there number plates.
All pretty dumb when they are on full view anytime, never understood it myself, cloners simply use the above program
I feel the same way..if someone wants to steal the info just go to show or see me on the streets.........

Are you sure they do? I wouldnt think you could just search the database for a number for a "RED BEETLE". What would be the legitimate use for that???
You can get most of the information from the DVLA website anyway if you know the make and reg number.

The point is, if I had a red beetle I wanted to clone, I could sit at the side of the road and wait 8 days for one to come by. Or I could spend 3 minutes browsing a forum like this for a number.

I could also go to a show and pick any number I liked, but whats easiest? Sitting on my arse at home, or paying to get to a show?

I think what is pretty dumb is people questioning why people would want to do it. Its their number, their car, and their time spent hiding it. What does anyone else care?

What if its a rare model? What if its just something you dont see often? What if they are lazy thieving scrotes and cant be arsed leaving their hovel to get a number?

There are some cars posted around these forums that you would wait a year to see another like...
