You don't say what year your car is, but see if this matches what you have..............

 

The car is 1974 but not original. Your diagram looks completly different to the position of the wires removed however all the colours match. I suspect it's always been wired wrong. I did re-wire it and left 53b Open as no bk/yw wire.
I'm just waiting for a new swith then i'll re-wire it to your diagram.

What does 'not original' mean?
Is the motor a squarish silver box type, or is it cylindrical?
Don't just connect as my diagram until you give all the details, or maybe some pics. Don't forget we're working blind here.

 

The beetle started life as a 1200beetle in 1974. It's been changed from 6volts to 12volts at some time and the engine has been replaced with a 1600 mexico engine. The motor is a squarish silver box. Don't really know what info to give you

 

OK, I take it the wiper motor was changed to a 12V one as well?
If the motor in the first diagram matches yours then use that diagram to wire it.
If your motor matches the one below (twin speed) then use that diagram.

 

I can only assume it's a 12volt motor. It's the same as the 1st picture 4 connectors. Thanks for the help.
