A bit off topic but someone on here might know or be able to help.

I am thinking of making a custom engagement ring from titanium, I was thinking of using an existing titanium ring and grinding/shaping/filing etc that to what I want.

Is titanium workable with normal tools? I'm thinking standard sort of grinding stones on a dremmel or mini drill. Or would I need something "specialist" to shape it with?

Cheers

Titanium is had to work with.

Depends which alloy of Titanium you choose, 6al-4v and 3-2.5 are common in mountainbike manufacture and one is far more workable than the other. 6al-4v is VERY hard stuff.

It is not that Ti is hard - but it work hardens very quickly, thus your cutters have to have a different cutting angle to mild steel tools.

If memory serves - the angles are closer to wood working or plastic working tools.

Also as l.a.r.d said - it sparks - a lot and can in certain circumstances burst into flame - but it is unlikley you will get that problem.

Worked on Ti on aircraft, wrecks tools in an instant, and you need cobalt bits to drill it. An absolute bugger to work with!!
