Beetle Diary !
OK, Iím doing this to show you guys what Iím up to, and as Iíve had the car for 18years, and Itís been on the road for erm well errr most of it, if I donít keep going you fine members can shame me into getting my sorry hide into the garage.
We moved the other year and Iím now the proud owner of a nice big double garage so I really have no excuses for not getting it done. It is with my family a constant source of entertainment and ridicule, mum : /snigger/ ìis the beetle done yet?î/chuckle/ LOL/, so I really do need to get it sorted!
Itís a 1971 1200cc beetle, been lowered ect ect , when I kinda got going on it a year or so ago I ordered engine parts to build a 2332cc so should be quite lively.
And last year I de-channelled the bonnet compartment as it had rusted beyond repair and sorted the couple of small rust spots that had appeared, I did paint it about 13 years ago red ën white, and when I first got it itís first mot it failed on all the usual bug bits, so that all got done, so pretty much it was restored then and had a bare metal re-spray when I last did it so itís over all condition is sound due to it being for about 90% of the time stored in an unused garage.
When the other year I did decide to get it done I was kinda just going to blow in the few rust spots, but Jay(7 eldest) didnít like the colour and thought I should paint it the same colour as Iíd just done his wheel chair, and Sam(the missis) thought the same and I was sort of thinking about it so I quite easily got talked into a colour change (again!)
Any way what with one thing and another most of this year nothing happenedÖÖ until the other month when the ball got rolling again!
So please find pictures enclosedÖÖ

basically the most of the inside bits have been painted, i've left out the bonnet compartment for now, as at this time i'm gripped in the horns of a dilema as wether or not to flip front it........ i later decide not to !
this was about 4 weeks ago.

The wings have been painted at work about a year + running boards + engine lid

Can't really see the colour much but its standox darkish blue (solid base) mixed 2:1 with a standox xsarillic?? (real pearly green) so it flips quite nicely between straight blue and pearl green in the sun its stunning!

Yes but how come a normal full face class 3 respirator is allowed in most countrys,3m test theirs with 2 pack and say"yep nout coming thru that"so why the need for air i dont know, what i do know is that a friend of mines old boss nearly died when his compressor let fumes directly into the mask, caused by a dodgy seal,he ended up in hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning! :(

no air fed used afraid, just a 3M fly mask, i do have an air fed at home but my compressor isn't really upto that and the spray gun, so do a coat vacate for a while and so on.
i do use an air fed ALL the time at work though (but then i am painting ALL the time!)

We've had compressor probs at work a few times before, usually after them service it ?!?"%^??,
You start smelling it you tell the boss, "i'm not breating that in !"
He'll try to convince you otherwise "nope, tell you what you breath it in for the next 8 hrs then "
Compressor people come back out fixing it "yeah, there's nothing wrong, normal"
"What you fixing it for then ??"
Then i go out a while later and they're spraying some sort of air freshener in the filter holder ??
"It's only odour"
"Yeah but if i can smell it somethings there isn't it"
and this is from a multi billion ££ company - tossers

nice!

very nice, love the colour!

Looks neat, i saw one at bugjam with the dash like that, cool..

Wonderful finish on the paint! .. how did you do it? what with..?

could you do a run down on the technique as i am learning to spray, did my own wings this year with a cheap gun and comp, some bits came out good when the gun put a good thickness on, dont know what
i did right or wrong in the bits that were dull.

Like to see more when back together!.. best of luck.

OK OK
i didn't do anything on it last weekend, BUT we did put the crimbo decor up and on Sunday we all went to Leicester hospitals Christmas party - so i was busy

as for tips the main thing is make sure your gun is clean and the spray pattern is good - should be a nice even straight line and not looking like a telephone handle!
make sure whatever your applying is mixed correctly.
put it on as evenly as you can, look at it to see if it's going on dry or too heavy and adjust technique if needed. basically if its dry you need to be putting it on a bit heavier (move slower or move gun closer whatever suits you best) and if it looks like it's going on too heavy don't put it on as heavy (move faster or gun further away)
errmmm hope that helps a bit !

cheers !, the real bummer of that being i may sell them as they're 4 1/2's and as i've a 2332 , prob turbo to go in it - i think i'll need a bit more rubber at the back
i love em tho so i may try to find a couple of 5 1/2's and refurb them the same colours ( real sparkly silver, and an ever so slightly metalic black)
