I have been looking on a judson supercharger fan club site and there's a guy on there who does judson cams!!!! they are $200 plus post so a bit more expensive than an engle but i think they could be a viable alternative to an engle 100 and possibly more suitable for my planned supercharged engine! ill find a link later on and stick it up!!!

heres the link the page says they are for 36hp engines!!!!!:D

http://vwjudsonregister.tripod.com/buyandsellpage.htm

theres some other cool stuff on there too!!!

with the exhaust it is 99% guesswork to cut and shut ;)

cam: engle 100 is a good choice for id range power

rockers: stock, i've shot peened mine, but that's because I do it at work.
Sorry for the dumb question but what is 'shot peening'? A treatment to strengthen the metal?

Cheers,

J

your engine is physically narrower than other vw engines .....so if you wanted an aftermarket exhaust ..it would have to specifically be made to fit the 1200 engine only ......either that ot you would have to cut ,narrow and re-weld the new exhaust

Hi Folks

Yes A 4 into 1 header is available for the 1200, SSP do sell them. Dont be tempted to fit a big fat muffler on the end of it, stick with a small flange quiet pack.......Exhaust gas scavange speed is lost with large diameter pipes and that will hurt the lil 1200. Remember, keep everthing small and fast.........

Although my 20 second run (best 1/4 so far) was with an open stinger set up....!

Will defo be out on the track in 2010 to break into the 19's or quicker!

Yo,

Does anyone know if 'HOT 1200' is still on this forum?

Ive messaged him about getting my 1300cc T/P heads flycut to fit my 1200cc project but havent heard anything from him. Noticed he hasnt posted in here for a while either?

J
Yes, im Here, busy busy as ever, dont have as much time to get on the forum, to busy doing the real thing.......!

Yes I can sort the flycutting out for you, you need to watch out for clearence between fin of cylinder and fin of barrel, they can touch if you go too far. The most I ever fly cut is 60thou (1.5m), after that you are going to have to start notching pistons to clear valves if running late high comp 1200 pistons and any of the Engle W range cams (remember 1200 piston only runs with 40thou (1mm) deck height clearence, a lot less than your 1300 to 1600 range.

Sweet! Thanks for getting back to me! Good that your busy!

Can I email you direct about my heads and flycutting? Have a few pics I wanna send.

Where are you based? And are you going to BugJam?

Cheers,

James

Hello Volkszone,
My name is Al, I'm rebuilding a 1200. I have a pre65 1200 case.
Here is my project 1960 Kastenwagen.

I have enjoyed this Thread for a week now and have read through it several times. I also checked out those links to bug-talk etc...
To gain some knowledge to rebuild my 1200 to gain the best HP.

Can I use a 74mm crank, is it possible? If I cannot, then I will want to use a 69mm counterweighted crank. I would of used the 64mm, but they don't sell these in a 4140 counterweighted, I don't want to get it welded counterweight.

I have noticed that the main bearings from the 64mm crank have a smaller Inner Diameter, when trying to fit to the 69mm cast crank.
And the Outer Diameter of the 69mm bearings have around 2mm gap when fitted into the 1200 case. The case has hardly any wear and the 64mm bearings fit perfectly. Can I use 69mm bearings that will fit correctly on the 1200 case, if so do I just get the measurements from the crank and buy the bearings. Just confusing. After reading Hot 1200 installing the 69mm without any problems.
Is this because he used a post65 1200 case ?

I'm hoping for over 70hp. Is this possible or am I dreaming.

you probably have a line bored case and a reground crank, the case will be bored to .25, .5, .75mm oversize, and I have seen 1mm before!
likewise the crank will be either .25, .5, or .75mm undersize, you need to measure the crank with a micrometer and you also need to torque the case halves together and put a bore guage down there (or take them to a machine shop and they will measure for you)

thx Ratfink.
I didn't even think of that, I will have to take a measurement.

With a 74mm crank, will I have to get the case clearance . will it even be suitable for 77mm B&P's considering there so short.
If I need 100 thou barrel spacers to get min. deck height, for a 69mm crank.
Do I just add another 5mm, which seems way to much. Would there be another way to use a longer stroke crank with 77mm B&Ps. Or, can it not be done. I'm just curious.

you can use any crank for a vw motor in it, but you'll need to run stroker pots and pistons, and for the bigger ones this means machining the case to get them in, and tbh that's kindof coming away from the hot 1200 idea. it's all about pulling as much power as possible from a small displacement engine.

OK, I'll use the 64-mm. But, I will get it counterweight-welded.
Thats the main reasoning for thinking of using a min. 69-mm cause they are counterweighted.
no real need to counterweight, you're just adding weight to the assembly, you want everything to be light but strong.
It's only a cast unit it'll twist at high revs, 6500 is probably the max safe rev limit with a balanced stock crank...

Thx Ratfink, That will save me a fair amount of $$ not getting the Crank CW. I'm mainly looking for power for hills, not looking for a race car. With the extra weight in a Type2 being 1035kg, I need all the HP I can squeeze from my Mouse Motor...

Has anybody fitted 1600 TP heads, instead of using 1300 TP.
I have plenty of 1600 parts, I have 043 1600TP heads which are pretty much brand new. Is there anyway of using them for my 1200.

Hey guys!

My little project is starting to come together now :) I have 90% of all the bits I need ;-)

I have a few questions.

1) I notice when stripping down my old 1200cc engines they have copper gaskets round the barrels on both ends (Surface that touches the case & surface that touches the head) Do these need to be replaced? Or are they not needed anymore? The 'Premium' gasket kit I have looks like it might have one set of paper gaskets? Anything Ive looked at online is for adjusting deck height not for sealing. Are these not really needed?

2) Once my 1300cc T/P heads have been machined, what do people recommend pushrod wise? Are the standard pushrods still ok? Or do I need to buy new ones and cut them to length?

3) Can anyone recommend a machine shop in the Surrey area to flycut the heads? & Maybe check my case over?

Cheers,

J
