Cut down the opening with a disc cutteR to suit the door?

 

Depends if there is any steel reinforcment in the frame? Usually you can tell if there are securing screws screwed into the outside profile.

 

In answer to your question :- It won't end well

Unless you own a upvc factory to reweld then redip in upvc

I would agree with above. It will probably be more hassle than its worth.

I was a upvc fabricator for 5 years.

Have yoy dismissed making the opening bigger?

Or find a local fabrication firm and see if they will knock up a door with old/obsolete/profile they may have to the right size at discount?

 

Doesn't end with the frame does it - you would have to cut down the door too.

Forget it.

You make the opening fit the frame/door combo, or you have a frame a door factory made that suits existing opening.

Trust me, I used to have a PVCu factory and made that stuff.

 

There's quite a bit of overhang from the door edge to the frame,wouldn't even consider trying to cut the door down just wondered if I could lose half inch each side of the frame.

Ahh ok will keep looking then cheers,can't really make the opening any bigger,one side is tight to the wall and the other has a window quite close.
These doors come up quite often on eBay just this one was v.local to us and cheap,sure the right size will come up soon

New Upvc doors are dirt cheap these days.

 

Not all hinge systems require an add-on to the jamb.

TBH, I hate the add on - it messes with my OCDness, and often I will order one on both sides to make it look right.

Agreed, they are so cheap now - I'm glad I got out of manufacturing when I did (20 yrs ago) the hay day was 25yrs ago, when an average window selling to public for £500 was sold to builder/fitter for £250 and cost £100 to make.

Now, with rising production costs, and greater competition causing falling prices - The margins are so tight the only way to make any money is on huge volumes, that means huge factories and huge investments.

The trick of it, is to see these things and get involved during their infancy and make good in the early days before the big boys take all the marbles from the school yard.
Wonder what the next big seller will be?

 

That's the million dollar question...

It was composite doors but people soon jumped on that band wagon and flooded the market with cheap rubbish

New conservatory tiled roof systems are good but I can't see them getting as big as frames & comp doors were

I always have an add on both sides, then the fitter covers it when he trims the outside. He does an awesome job. I've seen some proper Blunkett Upvc fitting over the years

 

Since we are on the subject of UPvC doors...

I have a large windows in my drawing room (unfortunately whole house is UPvC which I don't like but it was done before me I face Atlantic so it has its pluses!).

I've asked for two quotes locally to change window into a door....which doesn't involve changing opening apart from cutting down to floor level. Fitting a door (standard double width), capping cavity and making good. Door is standard double width and quite tall so would be normal door height with glass pane above.

Both quotes are £2,300 which sounds crazy to me. I could get to just over £1,500 assuming £700 for door, a few hundred for materials and two men one day.

What price should I expect to pay?

 

Skip supplied?
Flooring made good?
Plastering or render repairs?
Bricks cut or toothed in?
Plain white Upvc?

 

Ide refuse to pay it and stick with a window if i were you
