Is fact. Been known for a decade. Only just news as who deciding evidence is very clear. Also they listed processed and red meat separately so just quoting red meat bit slight naughty ;-) all in moderation is key as with sugar, fats, beer, coke and acid.

And for process meat there is sting correlations with cancer, but they could find only moderate evidence for a mechanistic process of how it occurs. Again, correlation does not equal causation.

Don't forget, that this is all for "high consumption", meaning over 300g a day!

Meh...everything in moderation. If you sit on your backside all day, eat and drink badly I'm sure you'll see adverse effects...live a balanced lifestyle I imagine most will be fine. You could get hit by a bus tomorrow, life's too short to live without bacon! ;)

Whenever I have veggies round I like to test their resolve by cooking smoked bacon. Only my fiancé has resisted so far! But as far as I see it, unfortunately cancer doesn't seem to care, you can lower the risk but it doesn't care who or what you are, if it wants you it gets you :( may as well enjoy yourself st that point.

I think the big problem here may be the word processed.

The government is having problems funding pensions because of the large number of wrinklies that are still knocking about. An awful lot of those wrinklies, our parents (or grandparents depending on your age), left school at fourteen, worked in shitty mills, or mines, consumed full fat everything - milk, butter, meat, full fat untipped ciggies and drank beer far more regularly than we do, for far longer than we have. If these experts are to be believed, they should all have died of cancer, strokes and heart attacks decades ago.

I think it's all of the additives and artificial flavours/colouring that causes the problems.

It's not just a coincidence that more people are getting cancer - and I'm sure there isn't just one cause either, but if the Workd Health Organisation are changing their advice you can bet there's more to it than has been published in the press.
I've been veggie for 25 years so I've eaten no meat or fish in that time. I got a type of breast cancer that is "fed" by oestrogen, and this hormone is used in the dairy industry and is in our water supply as a consequence of the Pill - clearly avoiding water isn't possible but I can and do avoid dairy.

Every one will take from this what they want and more power to you for that, but I can tell you that getting cancer makes you look at stuff like this in a new light ;)

Yep, and Oestrogen stays in the water for ever, every time it passes through a lady, the amount increases.
I remember reading a bit in the Lancet about how a study in Bern, proved that it is also responsible for some species like fish, to have a massive shift in gender birth ratio, other species like Aligators to be born hermaphrodite, the massive increase in male infertility, and even more controversially - responsible for the massive increase in males with homosexual preference.

Personally, I think the increase in cancers have many other reasons, not least of all the chemicals we put on the fields and feed animals to enhance growth.

The latest generation of cancer treatments (one being trailed by my Missus) do the exact opposite to growth hormones, by slowing down cellular reproduction.

Another fact that should be considered, is that I am a bricky, and don't have a clue about such matters

Other risks on the World Health Organisation IARC list of carcinogens (groups 1 to 2B):

Alcohol
Contraceptive pills
Salted fish
Being a furniture maker
Being a shoe repairer
Sunshine
Air pollution
Being a hairdresser
Being a shift worker
HRT
Polystyrene
Coffee
Petrol
Pickled vegetables
Being a dry cleaner
Being a firefighter
Being a printer

...and about 750 others.

Probably just don't do anything too stupid and get on with enjoying life :)

Oh, and my Mum died a slow, miserable and horrifying death a few months ago from COPD and lung cancer caused by smoking. She gave up 10 years ago, but it was too late by then. She'd want me to tell you this:

Don't smoke. It can end very badly.

You have to take statistics with a pinch of salt, the Guardian article says:

"The IARC’s experts concluded that each 50-gram (1.8-ounce) portion of processed meat eaten daily increased the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%."

But does not give a base line, if i have 1% (Hugely higher number than it actually is) chance of getting colorectal cancer for my age and i've increased it by 18% by eating processed meat.

An increase to 1.18%, big fucking deal, hand me a bacon butty :)

I just ran the actual numbers (hey, I'm an economist with access to the WHO data!) and the reality of the '18% increased risk' is hilarious:

A male my age (45) living in the UK has a 0.0293% likelihood of being diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

An 18% increase equates to an increase of 0.005274% or a total risk (rounded) of 0.035% vs 0.03%

That's exactly equal to the acceptable level of error correction used in statistical analysis at this level of granularity (+/- 0.005%)

The actual result should have been: zero increased risk.

Living is bad for your health and WILL cause you to die, the world death rate is still 100% ffs, it's just the media scaremongering again, w*****s.

As a great man once said "I refuse to tiptoe through life to arrive safely at death"

Rant over :)

JCC? As in John Cleveland College? Or dot out mean another JCC?

That comparison comes from comparing exposure to asbestosis and eating processed meats as causes for Bowel Cancer not all cancers - same as smoking - just by smoking you increase your risk of all cancers but obviously the biggest risk is for lung cancer, and it stands to reason that if you inhale asbestos fibres then you will also swallow them ;)
