Exhaust flange sizes

Hi,

I'm after some information on exhausts.

I have a 1961 Beetle with a 1200 engine (no. D 07 60 266 - which I believe is a later (1965 on) 1200 engine?).

Anyway, the turbo-trip-style silencer on it fell off during the week, ripping the flange off the header with it :(

So I'm looking for a replacement but have seen lots of talk about small and large flanges (oo-er missus). Can someone explain the difference to me, and whether either will fit my engine? (I'll be buying a new header and silencer).

I've measured the inside diameter of my existing header flange and silencer pipework and it appears to be about 41mm, is this the measurement they mean for the flange size, or is it the size of the flanges that bolt to the engine?

Thanks in advance!

Matt.
